IRS Reminds Taxpayers to Take Advantage of Recent Tax Changes

With little more than a week left in 2008 the Internal Revenue Service wants to remind taxpayers to be aware of recent tax changes as well as some recently reinstated tax deductions.
“A simple review of your current tax situation may result in a bigger refund or less taxes to be paid come tax time,” said IRS Spokesperson Luis D. Garcia.
The Internal Revenue Service offers these tax tips for you to consider.

Taxes and Holiday Charitable Giving

While the spirit of giving seems to grow during the holiday season, the IRS reminds taxpayers to keep some important points in mind when making donations with the expectation of deducting them on a federal tax return.
Taxpayers can deduct donations only if they make them to a qualified tax exempt organization.
"The IRS website allows taxpayers to search for many charitable organizations online with Publication 78," said IRS spokesperson Luis D. Garcia. “Qualified organizations can include non profit groups that range from religious to scientific, charitable to educational, or that work to prevent cruelty to children or animals. Generally, organizations will be able to tell you whether they are federally tax exempt and eligible to accept tax-deductible donations."

Legion Family Raising Funds for Wounded Warriors

INDIANAPOLIS (Dec 4, 2008) – The American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion have launched a fundraising effort to purchase comfort items for hospitalized troops recovering in U.S. military and VA medical centers around the world.
“The government does a good job of providing the essentials,” said American Legion National Commander David K. Rehbein. “We want to be able to provide items that usually don’t appear in the budget, such as personal sweat suits, I-Pods, DVDs and other comfort items. The American Legion family is challenging its members and all caring Americans to raise $50,000 by the holidays so we can brighten the season for those who have given us so much.”
The American Legion family raised nearly $350,000 during a similar effort for wounded military members recovering at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany last year.
The project is called Operation Comfort Warriors. Donors can make online contributions by visiting www.legion.org/ocw or by sending a check to Operation Comfort Warriors, P.O. Box 1055, Indianapolis, IN 46206. Administrative and promotional costs for Operation Comfort Warriors are paid by The American Legion, allowing all of the donations to be spent directly on the troops.
With a current membership of 2.6-million wartime veterans, The American Legion was founded in 1919 on the four pillars of a strong national security, veterans affairs, Americanism, and patriotic youth programs. Legionnaires work for the betterment of their communities through more than 14,000 posts across the nation.

Whatdaya Think – December 08

Hope all of you enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. It is my favorite holiday because there are no expectations except to show up at the dinner table and gorge myself! We traveled from Michigan to St. Louis to spend the Holiday with our daughter and four grandchildren. In fact, our grandson Zach celebrated his Bar Mitzvah and it was a special event.

Questions on Social Security

Question: My Part D prescription drug plan’s monthly premium has changed. I want to change my plan. Whom can I contact to help me select another plan? When can I make the change?
Answer: There is help available to assist you in reviewing and comparing plans. You can get help by calling Medicare at 1-800-633-4227 and talk to a trained Medicare Representative. Visit www.medicare.gov . Under Search, select “Compare Medicare prescription drug plans,” to compare cost and coverage of plans and drugs. Look in your 2009 “Medicare & You” handbook which you should have received in the mail for a listing of plans

Helping Our Seniors: A Priority That Won’t Change

With the New Year brings new challenges and new opportunities. I will continue to work on a bipartisan basis to ensure the priorities of seniors are enacted into law. Just before adjourning, the U.S. House of Representatives passed two bills I authored to improve the lives of seniors.

Good Ol’ Days: Jean Harlow

Jean Harlow, born under the name Harlean Carpenter in 1911, was not the only woman in the family who had dreams of being an actress. Her own mother was bitten by the acting bug and she divorced her husband, Jean’s father, to move to Hollywood. Young Jean accompanied her mother. However, instead of staying in Hollywood to pursue acting, Jean’s mother instead ended up marrying a new man and moving to Chicago. For some time Harlow was in Chicago with her mother, though this would not last long.
