Question: I read that since I receive my Social Security check by mail at my home I will receive a notice about a debit card that will replace my check. I have never used a debit card. I don’t want to receive one. Do I have any alternative or must I take the debit card instead of my check?
Answer: Yes, there are alternatives. 1. If you already have a checking account you can go to your bank and arrange for direct deposit of your Social Security check to your checking account. Your money will be automatically deposited in your account on the day you have been receiving your check by mail. 2. You can open a checking account at a financial institution of your choice. (Usually a bank or credit union.) However, do open the account at a bank that has a checking account that requires no minimum balance in the account, does not charge for checks, (furnishes you full checks) and usually the only requirement that you use direct deposit for your Social Security retirement; disability and survivor benefits as well as SSI benefits. If you do not use direct deposit for your check it will be suggested you use the debit card to receive your money.
